Finding Your Cool in the Midst of the Fire
Why Cinnamon Cacao is the Ultimate Summer Ritual
The summer heat has arrived, and with it, an instinct to seek shade, slow down, and find a pocket of stillness. When the sun is blaring, the thought of gathering indoors can feel heavy—we want air, we want nature, and we certainly don’t want to overheat.
Because of this, you might look at a recipe for Cinnamon Cacao and think: “A warming spice? In this weather? No, thank you!”
But as a medical herbalist, I’ll let you into a traditional secret: warming spices can actually be nature's most effective tool for cooling us down.
The Summer Paradox: How Cinnamon Cools You Down
In many hot climates around the world—from India to Central America—warm, spiced drinks are enjoyed year-round. There is a brilliant physiological reason for this.
When you sip a gentle, warming spice like cinnamon, it subtly stimulates your internal circulation and triggers your body’s natural temperature-regulating mechanisms. It opens the periphery, encourages a mild, cooling evaporation on the skin, and helps disperse trapped internal heat.
More than just physical cooling, cinnamon brings a profound emotional and spiritual cooling. When the summer energy is high, frantic, and outward, cinnamon acts as an anchor. It offers a delicate, woody fragrance and a sweet, comforting spice that grounds a scattered mind.
If you want to try this beautiful summer blend today, here is a simple ritual recipe straight from my kitchen:

The Sovereign Summer Blend: Cinnamon Cacao
This recipe makes one sacred cup. Multiply as needed.
Ingredients:
Your chosen dose of ceremonial cacao
1 cup of pure water
1 cinnamon stick (or 1/4 tsp organic powdered cinnamon)
Sweetness - you might add a little honey, agave syrup or vanilla essence.
The Method:
Infuse the spice: Bring your water to a boil, then immediately drop it to a simmer. If using a cinnamon stick, crush it slightly, add it to the water, and let it simmer gently for 10 minutes to draw out its medicine.
Strain and stir: Strain the woody bark out, returning the aromatic liquid to the heat. Lower the temperature and add your ceremonial cacao.
Whisk with intention: Whisk or stir rapidly. Bring it to a gentle simmer, but do not boil, as too much heat alters the beneficial, mood-boosting chemistry of the cacao.
Pour and pause: Once smooth and velvety, pour into your favourite ceremonial cup. (If using powder, whisk a pinch in now, and if you are adding a little sweetness, add this now as well).
Find a comfortable, shaded spot, say a quiet prayer or set an intention, and sip slowly. Enjoy a meditative practice, journaling, listening to your favourite music or simply the sounds of nature. Find your flow with some gentle yoga or movement medicine, and let yourself enjoy the moment fully! There is no right or wrong way to enjoy cacao; it’s a medicine that enhances our conscious connections and is best enjoyed in natural settings wherever possible, where we can intentionally connect to the Earth, ground and find our way home, back to the wisdom and guidance of our own hearts.
The Physical & Spiritual Magic of Cinnamon
Beyond its flavour, cinnamon is a powerhouse of healing. Long ago, it was considered more valuable than gold and given as a gift to kings.
For the Body: It is packed with protective antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. It supports cardiovascular and metabolic health by helping to balance blood sugar levels and increasing insulin sensitivity—giving you steady, sustainable summer energy without the spikes and crashes.
For the Spirit: Associated with solar energy and the fire element, cinnamon builds soft strength. It acts as a protective spirit to dispel negative energies, clears the mind, sharpens intuition, and is a traditional ally for attracting prosperity, worth, and abundance.
