Blue Lotus — A Guided Shamanic Journey with Gongs

I found Blue Lotus only three or four years ago, which still surprises me after thirty years as a herbalist. She came to me during a hard stretch of insomnia — I'd always struggled with nightmares, the kind that would wake me and leave me afraid to go back to sleep. It took a while for her medicine to settle in, but she has genuinely changed that. I might get one nightmare every couple of months now, where before it was every single night. She's become one of my most loved plant allies for exactly that reason — she helped me heal.

On my altar today: a candle, an image of the flower, and a cup filled with her petals. You're welcome to honour her in physical form too — a cup of tea is the gentlest way in, though she's also available as a resin, an essential oil, or a massage oil. Smoking is possible but not something I'd encourage; I'd rather protect the lungs. None of this is necessary, though — you can simply follow the journey.

Blue Lotus's Medicine — Body, Mind and History

Physically, she relaxes the nervous system and eases anxiety. She's considered a gentle lucid-dreaming stimulant, though for me personally she did something slightly different — she quietened the negative dreams rather than intensifying the vivid ones. She's also considered an aphrodisiac, though I find her sleep-supporting quality far more pronounced. As a tea, you can use as much as 5g a cup, though I'd suggest starting low — 0.5g, a small pinch — and building from there as you learn how she sits with you.

Her history reaches back to ancient Egypt, where she was used in temple ritual to help build ecstatic states, prized for the peace and calm she brings. There's a lovely piece of doctrine-of-signatures thinking here too: she floats, still, on the surface of the lake, and that stillness is said to be exactly what she offers us in return — emotional tranquility, the capacity to be calm.

How the Journey Works

We begin by cleansing the energy field in three layers — the outer protective bubble, the emotional layer, and the physical body — gathering love and light at the heart and pouring it down through each layer into the earth. From there we call in the seven directions as protective witnesses, so that only our allies can join us in sacred space.

Then the journey itself: settling the body, awakening the third eye, and travelling into the lower realm to meet Blue Lotus directly. She sometimes leads into muddier, murkier territory — the mud at the bottom of the pond she grows from — which can mirror the stickier, shadowed parts of ourselves we're sometimes shy to face. That's held safely within the journey, not something to brace for.

Coming Back: Integration and Reflection

As you land back in your body, take a moment — wiggle your fingers and toes, stretch, breathe. Whatever came through, whether visions, messages, or simply the best sleep you've had in a while, spend some time journaling if you can. That's genuinely where the integration happens, where the gifts of the journey settle in rather than slip away.

How to Prepare

  • Optional: a cup of Blue Lotus tea (start with a small pinch, around 0.5g), the essential oil, or simply her flower on your altar — no cacao is used in this journey

  • Find somewhere to lie down or sit fully supported, and darken the room if you can

  • Good headphones or speakers make a real difference — the symphonic gongs deserve proper sound

  • Keep a journal nearby for afterwards

  • Set aside uninterrupted time — this one unfolds slowly and gently
