Raise Your Vibration Fast: Three Simple Shamanic Drumming Techniques

Have you ever noticed how a single beat of a drum can stop your thoughts in their tracks? How the sound seems to bypass the thinking mind entirely and land somewhere deeper — in your chest, your belly, your bones? That is not a coincidence. That is the drum doing exactly what it has always done, across every culture that has ever used it: calling us home to ourselves.

Shamanic drumming is one of the oldest tools we have for shifting our vibration. I use my drum almost every day — to ground myself in the morning, to clear my energy when I’m scattered, to open the door to the spirit world when I’m journeying. And in this post, I want to share the three core rhythms I return to again and again, and what each one does.

You don’t need to be an experienced drummer. You don’t even need a drum to begin exploring these rhythms — though I will say that there is nothing quite like holding one in your hands and feeling the vibration move through you.

Why Shamanic Drumming Raises Your Vibration

Before we get into the rhythms themselves, it helps to understand why drumming works so effectively on our energy and our state of mind.

The human body is not separate from rhythm — it is made of it. Your heartbeat is a rhythm. Your breath is a rhythm. Your brainwaves pulse in rhythmic cycles. When an external rhythm enters our field, something remarkable happens: our body begins to attune to it. This is called entrainment — the tendency of biological systems to synchronise with a repeated external beat.

Faster rhythms (particularly those in the range of 160 to 220 beats per minute) stimulate the release of endorphins and serotonin — our body’s natural feel-good chemistry. They shift brainwave patterns towards the theta state, the same state accessed in deep meditation and dreaming, which is why drumming has been used for millennia as a gateway into altered states and visionary experience. Slower, steadier rhythms have the opposite effect: they slow the breath, calm the nervous system, and anchor us into the present moment.

In short, you can use the drum as a volume dial for your own energy. Let me show you how.

The Three Shamanic Drumming Rhythms

Rhythm 1: The Heartbeat Rhythm

This is the rhythm I come back to more than any other. It is the most natural place to begin, because we already know it — it lives inside us.

Before I play, I tune into my own heartbeat. You can do this by placing your hand over your chest and simply listening, or by following the line of your thumb to your wrist, placing three fingers down firmly, and pressing until you feel that steady pulse beneath your skin. Once you have it, you begin to mirror it on your drum.

From there, you have complete agency over your own state. If you want to soothe yourself — perhaps you’re anxious, overwhelmed, or just need to come back to your centre — you gradually slow the rhythm down. Your heartbeat will follow. The two will entrain, and you will feel yourself settle. If you want to bring energy in — if you’re starting the day feeling sluggish, flat, or disconnected — you raise the rhythm. More energy, more movement, more joy. The heart is where joy begins, and when we bring energy to it, we wake it up.

This rhythm is endlessly versatile. I use it at the start of ceremony, in moments of stress, and as a daily check-in with myself.

Rhythm 2: The Earth Heartbeat (Four-Beat Grounding Pattern)

This is a variation of the heartbeat rhythm, but its energy moves in a different direction — not inward, but downward. This rhythm is about connecting our heartbeat with the heartbeat of the Earth.

The pattern is a four-beat cycle: the first two beats are played on the drum, and the next two beats are held in silence. Beat, beat, [silent beat, silent beat]. Beat, beat, [silent beat, silent beat]. The silence is not empty — it is an active part of the rhythm. Those silent beats are felt in the body, completing the cycle internally even as the drum rests.

As this rhythm settles into your body, I invite you to imagine your feet growing roots — anchoring down through the floor, through the soil, into the deep body of the Earth beneath you. Bring your intention with you. Perhaps you have a prayer for the day, a dream you are calling in, or a question you are holding. Drum it into the Earth. Ask Mama Earth to support you, to guide you, to help you find your path.

I find this rhythm particularly powerful for clarity — it quietens the chatter of the mind and helps me arrive in my body. If you are someone who tends to live from the neck up, this one is for you.

Rhythm 3: The Shamanic Trance Rhythm

This is the rhythm that opens doors.

The shamanic trance rhythm is a fast, steady beat — typically somewhere between 160 and 220 beats per minute. At this speed, the rhythm becomes almost hypnotic. It stops being something you listen to and becomes something you move inside of. After a while, it is like driving a familiar road: the body takes over, and the mind is free to travel.

This is the rhythm I use for journeying. Once it is flowing, I turn my attention to my third eye — that space in the centre of the forehead, just above and between the brows — and I set my intention for where I want to travel. There are three realms accessible through shamanic journeying:

  • The Lower Realm — reached by travelling down through a portal in the Earth. This is where I connect with my power animals, my ancestral guides, and the deep wisdom of the land. I also journey here to work with Mama Cacao when I am preparing a cacao ceremony.

  • The Upper Realm — reached by travelling upward, through the sky and into the cosmic layers above. This is where I connect with my higher consciousness, my spirit guides, and the wider field of divine intelligence.

  • The Middle Realm — the realm we inhabit in everyday life, but accessed more deeply. I use this when I am connecting with the plant spirits in nature around me, or when I am asking a mountain, a river, or an ancient tree for guidance.

The trance rhythm is also simply wonderful for raising your vibration when you are not journeying at all. Play it for five minutes first thing in the morning and notice how it shifts your energy. The endorphin and serotonin response is real, measurable, and immediate. Spirit is always trying to communicate with us — this rhythm helps us tune in and receive.

What If I Don’t Have a Drum?

You can absolutely explore these rhythms without your own drum. There are wonderful recordings on YouTube and other platforms that will allow you to experience the different frequencies and notice how each one affects you. I encourage you to experiment — sit with the heartbeat rhythm, then try the trance rhythm, and pay attention to what shifts in your body, your mood, your mind.

That said, there is truly nothing like holding your own drum. The vibration you feel through your hands and forearms as you play is part of the medicine. It is a completely different experience from listening, and if you feel any pull towards it, I would encourage you to follow that call.

Beginning Your Own Drumming Practice

You don’t need to spend long. Even five minutes of intentional drumming in the morning — using any of these three rhythms — can transform how you move through the rest of your day. Here are a few simple suggestions to get you started:

  • Begin by tuning into your heartbeat before you pick up the drum. Take three slow breaths and arrive in your body.

  • Choose your rhythm based on your intention: heartbeat for self-connection, earth beat for grounding and clarity, trance rhythm for energy, joy, or journeying.

  • Start slowly and let the rhythm find you, rather than forcing it.

  • If you are using the trance rhythm for journeying, set your intention clearly before you begin: where are you going, and what are you seeking?

  • When you are ready to finish, gradually slow the rhythm down and bring yourself gently back to the room.

Be patient and curious with yourself. Every person’s experience with the drum is different, and the relationship deepens over time. The drum is alive — it will meet you exactly where you are.
