House Clearing for Sacred Harmony
As the wheel of the year turns towards Samhain, the air grows thin with mystery. The ancients knew that this season brings the “thinning of the veil” — a time when the spirit world draws closer to ours. Most of the time, these visitations are gentle: ancestors passing through, kind spirits wandering, unseen presences brushing past like wind through leaves.
But every so often, if a home carries disharmony — whether from old arguments, lingering grief, or simply stagnant energy — those subtle visitations can stir things up. Restlessness, sleeplessness, a heaviness in certain corners of the house, even repeated misplacements of objects… these are often the little whispers that lead people to call me for a shamanic house clearing.
House clearing is like spring-cleaning the soul of your home: a chance to bless, reset, and align your space with only the highest vibrational spirits of love and light.
A Simple Guide to House Clearing
If you feel drawn to try this for yourself, here’s a step-by-step guide you can adapt to your own home.
Prepare the Space
Ideally, give your home a physical tidy first: clear clutter, dust, and hoover, so the space feels fresh and ready.
✨ Pro Tip: Physical cleaning first makes energetic cleaning far more effective.
2. Set an Intention & Open Sacred Space
At the heart of your home, create a small altar to honour the house spirits and the elements:
A candle for fire
Incense for air
Salt or earth for earth
A bowl of water (ideally spring water) for water
Flowers, crystals, or something beautiful for spirit/ether
Light the candle, breathe deeply, and call in your guides or helpers. Speak aloud that you welcome harmony, protection, and the clearing of all heavy energies.
✨ Pro Tip: Always name clearly what you are calling in — don’t just focus on what you want gone.
3. Walk the Space with Awareness
Move through each room slowly, paying attention to how your body responds. Heavy energy might feel like tiredness, breathlessness, or air that’s too thick or too thin. Trust your senses — they’ll tell you where attention is needed.
✨ Pro Tip: Notice where pets or children avoid — these spots often hold stagnant energy.
4. Alcohol Spray – Dissolving Heaviness
Spritz corners, doorways, and hidden spaces with alcohol (vodka works beautifully).
The word “alcohol” comes from the Arabic al-khul, meaning “to remove spirits.” In energetic clearing, alcohol acts as a solvent, dissolving stuck or heavy energies so they can be released.
✨ Pro Tip: Add a few drops of essential oil like rosemary or lavender to uplift the vibration further.
5. Smudge or Mist
Traditionally, sage or other herbs are used, their smoke drifting into corners and cupboards to repel unwanted energies — even stubborn “ghosts.”
If smoke alarms make this tricky, you can use a hydrosol instead (rose water is my favourite), or simply use sound (a drumbeat, a clap, a song).
✨ Pro Tip: Where smoke lingers, energy is stuck — spend a little longer in those spots.
6. Rattle & Feather – Sweeping Energy Out
Use a rattle (or clapping) to shake energy loose, then sweep in a spiral from the centre of each room outward toward an open window or door that leads outside (not into a corridor).
Use a feather to waft energy out. You don’t need rare or exotic feathers — whatever bird lives near you will carry its own medicine. In Margate, I often work with crow or seagull feathers. A pigeon feather, with its fertile energy, is beautiful for blessing and calling in abundance.
✨ Pro Tip: Always move energy toward a true exit — otherwise, you’re just shifting heaviness from room to room.
7. Bless with Sound
When the heaviness is lifted, it’s time to invite harmony back in. Ring tingshas, a singing bowl, or even your own voice in song or humming. Walk the room in a spiral, letting the sound weave light into the walls.
If you’re a Reiki practitioner, you might also trace symbols in the air, placing them in each corner or in the four directions — north, east, south, west.
✨ Pro Tip: Higher, purer sounds (like bells) lift energy, while deeper tones (like drums) ground it — use both for balance.
8. Listen & Review
Once the clearing is complete, pause and listen. What messages or impressions have come through? Do the house spirits want an offering? Often, like us, they delight in flowers, crystals, shells, or natural treasures.
This is also a good time to look at feng shui principles or simple adjustments — moving furniture, adding plants, shifting colour — to help the flow of energy.
✨ Pro Tip: A simple bowl of fresh flowers or water offered regularly can keep house spirits on side as allies.
9. Close & Give Thanks
Return to your altar. Thank your guides and helpers, and blow out the candle. Offer a small gift to the house spirits — flowers, incense, or a bowl of water.
Encourage everyone in the home to rest quietly after the clearing, and ideally keep visitors away for at least 24 hours so the new harmony can settle.
✨ Pro Tip: A gift for the house spirits at the end (flowers, bread, or incense) seals the work beautifully.
Why Clear Your Home?
A house clearing doesn’t just remove heaviness — it creates space for joy, creativity, rest, and renewal. At Samhain especially, it’s a powerful way to prepare for the darker months, wrapping your home in light and warmth as you move into winter.
Feeling Called to Go Deeper?
You can absolutely begin with these steps yourself, but sometimes homes carry deeper stories that need professional support. If you sense your space is unsettled, or you’d like help aligning your home with only the highest vibrational spirits, I would be honoured to work with you.
